HIERARCHY OF RISK CONTROL Flashcards
SAFETY - UNIT 2
WHAT IS A HIERARCHY OF RISK CONTROL?
A system used in industry to minimise or eliminate exposure to hazards. It is a widely accepted system promoted by numerous safety organisations
WHAT ARE THE 6 STEPS OF THE HIERARCHY?
- Elimination
- Substitution
- Isolation
- Engineering
- Administration
- Personal protective equipment
- ELIMINATION - METHOD
Eliminate the risk by removing hazards completely from the workplace
(1) APPLIED TO DISHWASHER EXAMPLE
Unable to remove, as it is imperative to the workflow and unable to be moved
- SUBSTITUTION - METHOD
Provide a safer alternative
(2) APPLIED TO DISHWASHER EXAMPLE
Manual hand washing of equipment
3.ISOLATION - METHOD
Remove as much as possible from workers
(3) APPLIED TO DISHWASHER EXAMPLE
Keeping in area separate from workers using signage and barricades
- ENGINEERING - METHOD
Using controls to lessen any remaining risk
(4) APPLIED TO DISHWASHER EXAMPLE
A trained professional of the application to fix, comply to restrictions
- ADMINISTRATION - METHOD
Implement policies, procedures and training for people to follow when working with a hazard
(5) APPLIED TO DISHWASHER EXAMPLE
Workers have all necessary equipment to promote safety, how to wash, training, gloves, non slip shoes
- PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT - METHOD
Provide people with safety glasses, gloves, or footwear when working with a hazard and provide training in the use of these.
(6) APPLIED TO DISHWASHER EXAMPLE
Safety mats around water, gloves, apron, non-slip enclosed shoes → preventing slips, trips and falls
