The most basic principle of hygienic work practices is handwashing
- Hands should be washed at the beginning and end of every shift
- When changing activities, eg from raw food to cooked food, handling rubbish, toilet, smoking, blowing nose or coughing

5 STEPS TO HANDWASHING
A
- Remove all jewellery
- Rinse hands under warm water
- Lather hand in liquid and scrub for 20 seconds
- Rinse hands under warm running water
- Dry hands with paper towel and apply hand sanitiseR

FACILITIES TO ENSURE EFFECTIVE HAND WASHING INCLUDE
A
- Designated handwashing sink
- Warm water running tap which can be operated without the use of hands eg foot pedal, automatic or long handle for elbow
- Automatic liquid soap dispenser
- Paper towels for hand drying
