The most basic principle of hygienic work practices is handwashing

  • Hands should be washed at the beginning and end of every shift
  • When changing activities, eg from raw food to cooked food, handling rubbish, toilet, smoking, blowing nose or coughing

5 STEPS TO HANDWASHING

A
  1. Remove all jewellery
  2. Rinse hands under warm water
  3. Lather hand in liquid and scrub for 20 seconds
  4. Rinse hands under warm running water
  5. Dry hands with paper towel and apply hand sanitiseR

FACILITIES TO ENSURE EFFECTIVE HAND WASHING INCLUDE

A
  • Designated handwashing sink
  • Warm water running tap which can be operated without the use of hands eg foot pedal, automatic or long handle for elbow
  • Automatic liquid soap dispenser
  • Paper towels for hand drying
