The Muscles of Mastication Flashcards
What are the muscles of mastication?
Temproalis
Masseter
Lateral pterygoid
Medial pterygoid

What are the bony attachments of the temporalis muscle?
- Temporal fossa*
- Coronoid process of the mandible*
The anterior fibres of the temporalis contract
Elevatio and chewing
The posterior fibres of the temporalis contract?
Retraction
Boney attachments of the masseter?
Zygomatic arch
Outer surface of the ramus and coronoid process of the mandible
What is the masseters action?
Elevate the jaw- Main chewing muscle

What does the lateral pterygoid muscle attach to?
The lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate
What does the medial pterygoig muscle attach to?
The medial surface of the lateral pterygoid plate
What is the attachment of the pterygoid to the mandible like?
The lateral pterygoid muscle enters into the joint capsule of the TMJ to insert onto the neck of the mandible and also the articular disc of this joint.
To which part of the mandible does the medial pterygoid muscle attach?
Coronoid process
When the two lateral pterygoid muscles contract they cause what?
Pertrusion of the mandible
When the lateral pterygoid muscle contracts with the medial pterygoid of the same side it causes what?
Unilateral sing to the contralateral side
When the two medial pterygoid muscles contract they cause?
Elevation of mandible- can also cause protrusion

What muscles cause elevation of the mandible?
Medial pterygoid
Temporalis
Masseter
What muscles cause depression of the mandible?
- Lateral Pterygoid*
- Mylohyoid & Geniohyoid*
- Anterior Digastric*
What causes protrusion of the mandible?
Lateral pterygoid
What causes retraction of the mandible?
Temporalis
What causes side to side movement of the mandible?
Medial and lateral pterygoid
WHat is innervation of the muscles of mastication done by?
Branches of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
What is the only division of the mandible that carries both sensory and motor?
CNV3
What does the trigeminal nerve emerge from the cranial cavity through?
Ovale foramem
In the infratemporal dossa what do its motor branches supply?
The muscles of mastication
What does the inferior alveolar nerve do?
Enters into the mandibular foramen and provides sensory innervation to the mandibular area
