Lymphatic of the head and neck Flashcards

1
Q

What is the lymphatic system of the head and neck like?

A

Extensive network of small lymphatic capillaries that drain tissue fluid.

This fluid passes through regional lymph nodes and also through a terminal group of lymph nodes, the deep cervical lymph nodes, before being returned to the venous circulation.

Q

What are the deep cervical lymph nodes?

A

A group of lymph nodes which are found as a linked chain of nodes around the internal jugular vein, and within the fascia of the carotid sheath.

The chain of lymph nodes extend from the base of the skull to the root of the neck at the thoracic inlet.

Q

What is at the ifnerior end of the deep cervical chain of lymph nodes?

A

The efferent lymphatic vessels join together to form the jugular lymph trunk on each side.

Q

What is the location and drainage of the tracheal nodes?

A

Location- Around traches

Drainage- Trachea and thyroid

17
Q

Efferent lymphatic vessels from?

A

All of these groups of lymph nodes carry lymph to the deep cervical nodes.

18
Q

A constant lymph node lies at what junction?

A

Of the internal jugular and common facial veins – the jugulodigastric or tonsillar node.

This becomes enlarged in tonsillitis and is therefore the commonest swelling to be encountered in the neck.

19
Q

What is Virchow’s node?

A

Left Supraclavicular region- receives the lymphatic drainage from the Abdominal cavity and hence can be a sign of disease elsewhere in the body

20
Q

What is the surgery for malignancy in the neck?

A

May include a “neck dissection” this refers to the removal of lymph nodes and surrounding tissues which is usually undertaken in conjunction with removal of the primary tumour (eg Tongue base)
