The Hyoid Bone Flashcards
Why is the hyoid bone fragile?
The hyoid is the only bone in the body which is not articulated with another bone, and is also quite easily damaged.
What muscles attach to the hyoid bone?
- Suprahyoid muscles*
- Infrahyoid muscles*
- Hyoglossus & Genioglossal* (a muscle of the tongue)
- Middle pharyngeal constrictor muscle**(a* muscle of the pharynx)
What muscles supply of the mylohyoid muscle?
CNV3
What muscles supply of the geniohyoid muscle?
C1 and CNV3
What muscles supply of the digastric muscle?
Anterior- CNV3
Posterior belly- Digastric branch of the facial nerve
What muscles supply of the stylohyoid muscle?
Facial nerve
What action would the suprahyoid muscles have on the mandible and on the hyoid bone?
Generally elevate the hyoid bone & widen oesophagus during swallowing - They Depress the mandible to open the mouth.
What are the suprahyoid muscles?
Mylohyoid
Geniohyoid
Digastric
Stylohyoid
What are the infrahyoid muscles?
Sternohyoid
Sternothyroid
Thyrohyoid
Omohyoid
What is the nerve supply of the sternohyoid muscle?
C1-3
What is the nerve supply of the sternothyroid?
C2 and 3
What is the nerve supply of the thyrohyoid?
C2
What is the nerve supply of the omohyoid?
C1-3
What action would the infrahyoid muscles have on the hyoid bone (and on the larynx)
They function to depress the hyoid bone & elevate larynx during swallowing & speech.
