The Larynx Flashcards
What does the larynx produce?
A sound

With which structure is the larynx continuous with superiorly?
Eppiglotic folds
What does it continue as inferiorly?
Trachea

The prominence on which of these cartilages makes the “Adam’s apple” in males?
Thyroid cartilage
Which of these cartilages is paired?
Arytenoid, Corniculate, & Cuneform Cartilage
Which of these cartilages is a complete ring shaped cartilage?
Cricoid cartilage

The space between the laryngeal cartilages is occupied by?
Dense connective tissue membranes

What membrane lies inferior to the vocal cord?
Cricothyroid ligament
Why is the cricothyroid ligament important?
Due to its position inferior to the vocal cords, this membrane is sometimes pierced in emergency situations when acute swelling of the vocal cords (due to an anaphylactic reaction) causes stridor. (Coniotomy)
What is the laryngeal inlet?
Epiglottic cartilage
2 Aryepiglottic fold
3 Arytenoid cartilage
4 Corniculate Cartilage
What is the lumen of the pharynx divided into?
3 parts:
- The vestibule, or upper part, is the area between the laryngeal inlet and the vestibular folds (or false vocal cords)
- The middle part lies between the vestibular folds and the (true) vocal cords
- The lower part extends from the vocal cords to the lower border of the cricoid cartilage.
What are the vocal folds important for?
Voice production.
Intrinsic muscles of the larynx control movement of the vocal fold as well as the controlling the diameter of the laryngeal inlet.

What is the recurrent laryngeal nerve vunerable during?
Vulnerable during many invasive procedures of the neck so it is important that you examine the wet specimens and models available and familiarize yourself with the location of this nerve.
What would happen if the recurrent laryngeal nerve was transected?
- Can result in a weakened voice (hoarseness) or loss of voice (aphonia)*
- Vocal cord paralysis*
What is the sensory nerve supply to the mucous membrane of the larynx?
CN X branches – inferior branch of the superior laryngeal nerve & the recurrent laryngeal
Idenity which one of these is in normal respiration, rapid brathign and then speajing

A- Speaking
B- Normal respiration
C- Rapid breathing
