Histology of the tongue and salivary glands Flashcards
Glands seen on image above are what?
Von Ebner’s glands
What type of epithelium lines the dorsal surface of the tongue?
Stratifies Squamous Keratinising Epithelium
What type of muscle fibres underlies the epithelium of the tongue?
Skeletal muscles
What are the 3 main paired of salivary glands?
Each of which is responsible for a slightly different type of secretion (ie predominantly serous, predominantly mucous or mixed).
This difference is reflected histologically in the presence and amount of serous or mucous acini (secretory components)
What is the acinus is?
Rounded secretory component of a gland
What do the serous acini secrete?
Secrete proteins, which means that they stain strongly with H and E stains
What do mucous acini secrete?
Secrete the glycoprotein mucous which stains poorly with H&E.
On the diagram below, label which kind of acinus is:
A- Serous acini
B- Mucous Acini
D- Myoepithelial cell.
What is the function of the myoepithelial cell?
Contract to push the contents out of the acini
What gland is this?
What is it secretion?
Gland- Parotid
Secretion- Predominantly serous
What gland is this?
What is it secretion?
Sublingual
Secretes mucous
What gland is this?
What is it secretion?
Submandibular
Mixture of mucous and serous
