The Ankle Joint Flashcards
What is the ankle type of joint?
Hinge synovial joint
What is a mortise type of joint?
The ankle is a type of mortise joint – meaning that the bones at the superior aspect of the joint provide a socket in which the talus fits into and can fit into a move.
The articular surfaces of the ankle are:
The distal end of the tibia and fibular with the superior part of the talus bone.
The malleoli grip the talus tightly during the movements of the ankle joint.
The malleolar grip is strongest during dorsiflexion movement of the ankle joint.
- Deltoid ligament: Tibiovanciular part
- Deltoid ligament: Tibotalar part
3. Lateral collateral ligament: posterior tibiofibular ligament
4. Anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament
5. Lateral collateral ligament: calcaneofibular part
6. Lateral collateral ligament: anterior talofibular part
Which ligament of ankle joint is the weakest?
Anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament
Which ligament of the ankle joint is named the deltoid ligament?
Medial ankle ligament
During which movements of the subtalar joint are ankle sprains more common?
Plantar flexion and inversion
Because of the strength of these ligaments both over inversion and eversion of the ankle joint can cause what?
Fractures to the either the medial or lateral malleoli.
What are the muscles involved in dorsiflexion?
Tibialis anterioer, extensor hallicus longus and extensor digitorum longus
What are the muscles involved in plantarflxion?
Posterior compartment: Gastrocnemius, soleus, plantaris, flexor hallucis longus, flexor digitorum longus, tibialis posterior, peroneus longus, peroneus brevis
