The Face Flashcards
Name these muscles and their action

What does cranial nerve 7 do?
Innervates all muscles of facial expression
Which foramen does the facial nerve emere onto the side of the face?
The sytlomastoid foramen
What are the 2 bony points on either side of the stylomastoid foramen?
Mastoid process and styloid process
What does the facial nerve emere from before it splits into its terminal branches
Parotid gland
Branches of facial expression

What spares the forehead and what does not?
A stroke spares the forehead
Bells palsy does not
What are the 3 salivary glands?
Submandibular
Sublingual
Parotid
What does the long base of the parotid gland overlie?
Anterior border of the SCM muscle
What does the parotid gland extend superiorly to?
The zygomatic arch
What does the parotid gland extend inferiorly to?
The angle of the mandible
What does the apex of the pyramid lie over?
The masseter
What is just posterior to the gland?
Extends to jjst anterior to the external audioty meatus
What type if gland is the parotid gland?
Exocrine
Exocrine have ducts
Endocrine go straight into blood stream
What nerve emerges from the anterior border of the parotid gland?
Facial nerve- Buccal branch
Where does the parotid duct run?
Runs forward, superficial to the masseter muscle and then pierces the buccinator muscle to open into the oral cavity
What is the buccinator innervated by?
Facial nerve
Where does the parotid duct open into the oral cavity?
Stenson’s duct- Upper second molar
What structures pass into the parotid gland?
Facial nerve
ECA
Retromandibular vein
What divison of the autonomic nervous system would be secretomotor to the parotid salviary gland?
Parasympathetic
Which cranial nerve carries parasympathetic fibres destined for the parotid gland (i.e. pre-ganglionic fibres)?
Glossopharangeal nerve
Where does the sympathetic innervation to the parotid gland originate from?
Superior cervical ganglion

What is the facial artery and superficial temproal artery a branch of?
ECA
What does the facial artery wind around to reach the face?
Mandible bone
Which muscle on the side of the face lies immediately posterior to the facial artery as it enters onto the face
Masseter
Just before the facial artery enters onto the side of the face which gland does it groove?
Submandibular salivary gland
Where does the facial artery end?
Ends as the angular artery at the corner of the eye (it anastomoses)
What does the facial vein and superficial temproal vein drain into?
IJV then brachiocephalic
