Study the diagrams below, showing a section through a kidney and a stylised nephron, in conjunction with the microscope slide. Specifically, on the low power slide above locate the outer cortex, the inner medulla and the cortex/ medulla boundary and appreciate that the outer cortex is much denser than the inner medulla.

Locate and identify dense, circular glomeruli and thick-walled convoluted tubules within the cortex, then locate the thin-walled ascending and descending limbs of the loops of Henle within the medulla. Deeper into the medulla, locate the much larger collecting ducts
