Studying Cells Flashcards
What is an artefact
Something observed in a scientific investigation or experiment that is not naturally present but occurs as a result of the preparative or investigative procedure
What is a buffer
A solution used to prevent changes in PH
What is centrifugation
Process of separating out particles of different sizes and densities by spinning then at high speed in a centrifuge
What is a light microscope
Instrument that magnifies an object using light
What is magnification
Increasing the visual size of an object
What is a photomicrograph
Photograph of an image produced by a microscope
What is the resolution
The ability to determine two objects in close proximity as being seperate entities
What is a scanning electron microscope
An instrument that magnifies by detecting electrons that have been bounced off the surface of an object
What is a transmission electron microscope
Instrument that magnifies by detecting electrons that have been transmitted through an object
What are the features of a light microsope
Use lenses to focus a beam of light through the specimen
Lower resolution than electron microscope
Can view live specimens
Can see colours
Simple staining and slide preparation
Transmission electron microscope features
Use electromagnets to focus a beam of electrons through the specimen
Specimen is placed in a vacuum: must be dead
Specimen must be thinner and more complex staining procedure
Black and white only
Higher resolution than light, due to smaller wavelength of electrons
Can see smaller objects IE.nternal structure of organelles
What are features of scanning electron microscope
Use electromagnets to focus a beam of electrons onto the specimen
Resolution not as high as TEM
black and white only (computer can add colour)
3d image produced
