Counter current flow is the flow of 100 percent oxygenated water against blood flowing the opposite way in the capillaries of the water,as it travels across the gradient is slowly but surely loses its oxygen concentration as it diffuses into the blood,at the end of the lamellae it is not yet 0 percent oxygen so diffuses across and travels back up whilst gaining oxygen again and being nearly 100 percent oxygen content again,this means equilibrium is not reached and a diffusion gradient is maintained across the entire length of the lamellae.
