Diffusion And Osmosis Flashcards
What is the concentration gradient
A comparison of the concentration of a substance in two area.
What is diffusion
The movement of molecules or ions from a region where they are in high concentration to one where their concentration is lower
What is facilitated diffusion
Diffusion involving the presence of protein carrier molecules to allow the passive movement of substances across plasma membranes
What is flaccid
Plant cells or tissue that is dropping as a result of a lack of water
What is hypotonic
When the water potential is higher (or less negative) on one side of a membrane
What is hypertonic
When the water potential is lower (or more negative) ion one side of a membrane than another
What is isotonic
When the water potential is the same on both sides of a membrane
WHat is lysis
The disintegration of a cell by rupture of the cell wall or membrane
What is osmosis
The passage of water from a region of high water potential to a region where it’s water potential is lower , through a selectively permeable membrane
What is passive movement
The movement of substance without the need for energy from ATP
What is plasmolysis
Contraction of the cell membrane of a plant cell, resulting in it pulling away from the cell wall as a result of a loss of water
What is a solute
The minor component ina solution, dissolved in the solvent
What is a solution
A liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent)
What is a solvent
Teh major component in a solution as a result of dissolving the solute
What is turgid
A plant cell that contains the maximum volume of water it can. Additional entry if water is prevented by the cell wall stopping further expansion of the cell
