Cardiovascular Diseases Flashcards
What are diseases associated with the heart and blood vessels known as
Cardiovascular diseases
What do most cardiovascular diseases tart with
An atheroma
What is an atheroma
The medical term for the build-up of materials that stick to arteries
What is the first step of the formation of atheroma
Damage to endothelial cells.macrophages and lipids from the blood clump together to form fatty streaks
What is the second step of atheroma formation
White blood cells, lipids and connective tissue build up and harden and may develop into an atheroma
What is the third step of the formation of an atheroma
Blood flow can be restricted, increasing blood pressure and can cause aneurysms or blood clots
What is the simple definition of an aneurysm
A swelling of arteries
What is the simple definition of thrombosis
A blood clot
What is formed when atheromas are formed in coronary arteries
Coronary heart disease
What does coronary heart disease do
Reduces blood flow to the heart muscles resulting in myocardial infarction
What is a myocardial infarction in simple terms
A heart attack
What occurs in a myocardial infarction
The heart muscle is no longer supplied with sufficient blood
The muscles requires oxygen and glucose from the blood for respiration and ATP production
Prevention of respiration causes the heart muscle to become damaged and possibly to die
