Roles Of Water Flashcards
Why is water a good solvent
Many substances can easily dissolve in water
Why is water playing a big part in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
As the water helps them dissolve substances e.g. chemicals involved in metabolic reactions such as respiration
Why is it crucial bodies of water contain dissolved oxygen
It is used by organisms living in the water to carry out respiration
Due to excellent solvent properties what can water do to substances
Transport them, a good example being in the blood plasma
What dissolved substances are in the blood plasma
Co2
Mineral ions such as the sodium ion
Chemicals such as glucose and amino acids
What does water in the xylem contain
Dissolved minerals ions such as the magnesium ion
What does magnesium ions do once in the leaves
They are used to make chlorophyll for photosynthesis
Water contains very good cohesive properties, why is this
Sthis is due to the hydrogen bonds between the water molecules
What does cohesion allow water molecules to do
It allows long columns of water molecules to travel in the xylem tubes
