Fish Respiratory System Flashcards
What characteristics do bony fish have when talking about repiration
Water proof scales
Small surface to volume ratio
What are the basic steps of bony fish respiration
Oxygen and water enters through mouth
Water passes over gills
Deoxygenated water leaves
Where are gills located
In a cavity on the side of the fishes head
How many Gill arches are in each side of the fishes head
Four pairs
What is located on each Gill arch
Two series of stacked Gill filaments splayed out as a v
What are Gill lamellae
Disc like projections
Where is the gas exchange carried out in a bony fish
Across the surface of the lamellae
What are the gills adaptations
Very large total surface area
Single layer of epithelial cells
Dense networks of capillaries carrying blood running underneath (close to surface)
Fish pushes water over gills to ensure constant ventilation
What is the countercurrent system
The flow of blood and water over the Gill lamellae occurs in opposite directions
Where does water always pass
Near blood that has less oxygen in it
What is there more of in water than blood
Oxygen
What does it mean if it is parallel
There is equilibrium so diffusion is not occuring until necessary
What does counter current mean
There is no equilibrium so diffusion will occur
