ATP AND ADP Flashcards
In ATP are the bonds between the phosphate weak or strong?
Weak (they have a low activation energy and are easily hydrolysed
What happens when the terminal bond is hydrolysed
Energy is released and this energy is used by the cell or organism
What does ATP hydrolase catalyse
The hydrolysis of ATP to ADP and an inorganic phosphate ion
What can ATP synthase do
Catalyse the addition of a pi to DP to make ATP
Why’s can the hydrolysis of ATP be used to do
Phosphorylate other compounds
What are all the factors of ATP making it a good universal energy source
Releases energy in small amounts
It is easily hydrolysed in one step to release adp pi and energy
When energy is released from reactions or by proton gradients it can be rapidly resynthesised from ADP and Pi
It cannot keav through cell membranes
It phosphorylates other compounds making them more reactive
