classification of organisms Flashcards
what is the binomial system
internationally recognised method of naming organisms using the genus and species names
what is classification
the action of putting something into a category, how organisms are placed into different taxonomical groups
courtship behaviour
the behaviour by which different species identify, attract and select their partners for reproduction
what is DNA base sequence
the order of nitrogenous bases in a molecule of DNA
what is a hierarchy
a system in which items are placed in groups within groups but with no overlap between groups
what is a phylogenetic tree
a branching diagram showing the revolutionary relation ships among different species
what is phylogeny
the study of evolutionary history of groups of organisms. it tells us who’s related to who and how closely
what is taxonomy
the science of classification
how many levels of groups are used to classify organisms
there are 8 levels of groups used to classify organisms. These groups are called taxa. each group is a taxon
how are the taxa groups arranged
the groups are arranged in hierarchy, with the largest groups at the top and the smallest groups at the bottom
is there overlap with the classifications of groups
there is no overlap, organisms can only fit into one group at each level
what is domain bacteria comprised of
this domain comprises of uni cellular prokaryotic bacteria
what is domain archea comprised of
this domain comprises of unicellular prokaryotic organisms that are similar to bacteria but are in some ways more related to eukaryotes
what is domain Eukarya comprised of
this domain comprises of all unicellular and multicellular eukaryotic organisms
what is kingdom protista made up of
this is made up of mostly uni cellular protists such as amoeba and paramecia
