Enzymes Flashcards
What does the substrate do if the active site had a complimentary shape
It binds to the active site
What does the induced fit model say
The active site changes shape as it binds to the substrate
What is it called if the active site changes shape as it binds to the substrate
An enzyme substrate complex
What happens if the bond bends
It lowers the activation energy
What are the factors affecting the rate of a reaction
Substrate and enzyme concentration
Temperature
Oh
Inhibitors
What can increasing the concentration do
Increasing the concentration (adding kre enzyme and substrate) can increase the rate of ES complexes formed
What happens when you increase the temperature in a reaction
The particles move faster which increases the rate of enzyme substrates formed
What does high temp and pH change do to a reaction
If the active site changes shape (denatured) this will decrease the rate of ES complexes formed
What happens if the active site changes shape
It is called denatured
What happens to enzymes at low temperatures
They are inactives
What happens to enzymes at high temperatures
They denature
What does increasing the temperature too much do to the rate of reaction
It decreases the rate of reaction as hydrogen bonds are broken and the active site is not complimentary so fewer ES complexes are formed
What is denaturation
When a structure can be irreversibly altered by conditions
Active site changes shape- substrate can no longer bind
What happens if the pH changes in a reaction
The ionic bonds within the enzyme will change and fewer ES complexes will form
What is an inhibitor
A compound or macromolecule that blocks the action of an enzyme
