Lipids Flashcards
What are the two types of lipids
Phospho and tryglycerides
What is in the tryglyceride structure
3 fatty acid chains
What is in the phospholipid structure
A hydrofillic head and hydrophophobic tails one tail containing saturated fatty acid and one unsaturated
What bond does lipids use
Ester bonds
What is a bilayer
A film two molecules thick
What is tryglycerides
Triglyceride: The major form of fat stored by the body. It consists of three
molecules of fatty acid combined with a molecule of the alcohol glycerol.
What are fatty acids
Fatty Acid: Organic molecule consisting of a hydrocarbon chain and a carboxylic acid (-COOH) group
What is saturated
Saturated (Fatty acid): contain only single bonds between carbon atoms in
the chain
What is unsaturated
Unsaturated (Fatty acid): contain one or more double bonds between the
carbon atoms in the chain.
What is an R group
• R group (in Fatty acids): A hydrocarbon chain which can vary in length and
number of single/double bonds between carbons in the chain
What is the emulsion test
Emulsion Test: A method to determine the presence of lipids
What are fatty acid chains
They are long chains of hydrocarbons with a carboxyl group at one end they can be saturated or unsaturated
What type of bond does saturated fatty acids have
Carbon-carbon single bonds this means the hydrocarbon chain has as many hydrogens as possible
How many hydroxyl groups does glycerol consist of
3
What is the lipid emulsion test
Mix sample water with ethanol
Add water
Milk white emulsion will appear if the test is positive
