What are recurrent aphthous ulcers?
Recurrent painful round or ovoid with inflammatory halos
Who gets recurrent aphthous ulcers?
More common in females and non-smokers
Nutrient deficiency
Crohn’s disease can be a secondary cause
How are recurrent aphthous ulcers diagnosed?
-History taking and oral examination
-Minor aphthous ulcers= most common, <10mm diameter
Major aphthous ulcers= >10mm diameter
Describe a minor aphthous ulcer?
<10mm diameter
Grey/white centre with erythematous halo
Heal within 14 days without scarring
Rarely affect dorsum of tongue or hard palate
Describe major aphthous ulcer?
> 10mm diameter
Persists for weeks and months without healing
Heal with scarring
How to treat recurrent aphthous ulcers?
Oral trauma should be avoided as well as acidic foods/drinks which cause pain
Topical or systemic corticosteroids can lessen severity and duration of attacks
