Lesions very common in the sigmoid colon and rectum
What are hyperplastic polyps?
Small and well-defined and have a very typical “serrated” appearance histologically
Are hyperplastic polyps dangerous?
NO
Little consequence clinically but are often removed to exclude other pathology
What is a hamartoma?
Tumour-like mass that contains a mixture of all different tissue types present within an organ
Why do hamartomas occur?
Due to polyp syndromes
Or solitary lesions
Which polyps present in children?
Juvenile polyps
-Big cystically dilated glands
Example of a neoplastic polyps?
Adenomas
-Premalignant growth of glandular tissue
The bigger the adenoma the….?
Greater the risk of developing cancer

Distal part of the colon and bowel cancer screening programmes aim to detect these
