What is it?

A

A tubular structure 2” long, 2 ft above IC valve in 2% of people due to incomplete regression of the vitello (Intestinal valve)

Who gets Meckel’s diverticulum?

A

Patients who have has incomplete regression of vitello intestinal duct, may contain heterotopic gastric mucosa

How does it present?

A
  • Before 2> y/o
  • Commonly asymptomatic
  • Painless rectal bleeding in toddlers
  • Diverticulitis in adults
  • May cause bleeding and perforation or diverticulitis mimicking appendicitis
  • 50% have gastric mucosa which secrete HCL and Peptic ulcers
