What is appendicitis?
Acute inflammation (neutrophillic) of appendicitis
Appendix pathology?
Muscle coat inflammation, mucosal ulceration and serosal congestion and pus in lumen
Who gets appendicitis?
More common in children but can occur in adults
Peaks again in elderly
Things which can trigger onset of appendicitis?
Faecoliths (dehydration)
Lymphoid hyperplasia
Parasites
Tumours (rare)
How does appendicitis present?
Vomiting Abdo pain RIF tenderness Increased WCC Mild pyrexia/tachycardia Rosving's Flexing right hip lifts inflammed appendix and eases pain
What is Rosving’s?
Pressing on left causes pain on right
How is appendicitis diagnosed?
US useful in women and children
CRP and WCC analysis
Urinalysis
Abdominal X ray to rule out other causes
How is appendicitis treated?
Appendectomy
Analgesia
Anti-pyretics
Complications of appendicitis?
Peritonitis Rupture Abscess Fistula Sepsis & liver abscess
