Blood-blood transfusion Sex PWIDs No vaccination available Chronic infection

How is hep C diagnosed?
A
- Test for IgG antibody to Hep C virus (if +ve then there is a past/active infection)
- Test for Hep C RNA by PCR
- If positive there is active infection

How is Hep C treated?
A
No vaccination so limit risk exposure

Treating chronic hep C infection?
A
Treat ASAP
12 Different antivirals
Peg interferon + ribavarin +/- telaprevir

Prognosis of Hep C?
A
Chronic infection can develop to cirrhosis, chronic liver failure, and cancer (no way back from chronic infection)

Presentation of Hep C?
A
Acute infection: as per Hep A (mild)
Chronic: As per chronic liver disease
