How is hep C diagnosed?

A
  • Test for IgG antibody to Hep C virus (if +ve then there is a past/active infection)
  • Test for Hep C RNA by PCR
  • If positive there is active infection

A

No vaccination so limit risk exposure

Treating chronic hep C infection?

A

Treat ASAP
12 Different antivirals
Peg interferon + ribavarin +/- telaprevir

Prognosis of Hep C?

A

Chronic infection can develop to cirrhosis, chronic liver failure, and cancer (no way back from chronic infection)
