Intestinal Failure Flashcards
What is it?
Inability of intestine to maintain adequate nutrition or fluid status via the intestines
What can IF be a result of?
Obstruction dysmotility, surgical resection, congenital defect or an absorption problem
How is it diagnosed?
Classified as types of intestinal failure:
- Acute IF= Type 1&2
- Chronic IF- Type 3&4
What is type 1 IF?
Self-limiting IF, critical illness
What is type 2 IF?
Serious illness requiring prolonged parenteral support
What is type 3 IF?
Long term parenteral support at home
How is IF treated?
-IV supplementation is required because the reduced function of the intestine for the absorption of macronutrients and water.
Treating type 1 IF?
Replace the fluid and correct electrolytes, give Parenteral nutrition
PPIs
Treating type 2 IF?
Generally septic patients with abdominal fistulae so will most likely need weeks/months of care in ICU
Treating type 3 IF?
Home parenteral nutrition
Intestinal transplant: last resort when loss of venous access or liver disease
