What is it caused by?
A
Acute or chronic occlusion of superior mesenteric or inferior mesenteric arteries

Who gets it
A
- Elderly
- People with arterial disease
- Woman on pill
- Patients on nicorandil

How does ischemic colitis present?
A
- Sudden onest of abdominal pain
- Bright red blood passed per rectum
- +/- diarrhoea
- Distended tender abdomen

Diagnosis?
A
Differential diagnosis of other colitis
- Urgent CT scan- exclude perf
- Unprepared flexible sigmoidoscopy and biopsy

How is it treated?
A
Symptomatic treatment
Urgent surgery can be needed
