What is it?
A
Inflammation of the peritoneum can be localized resulting in pain and tenderness

When is acute peritonitis present?
A
All GI inflammatory conditions or generalized which is serious irritation of peritoneum owing to infection

How does it present?
A
- Perforation
- patient may then improve slightly then get worse

How is it diagnosed?
A
CXR- detect air under diaphragm
Serum amylase measured- diagnose acute pancreatitis
US and or CT

Treatment of acute peritonitis?
A
Treated surgically
NG tube
IV fluids and ABs (quick to avoid sepsis)
