What is oral candidasis?
A
Fungal infection common in the immunocompromised

Who gets oral candidasis?
A
Adults who have just finished a course of broad spectrum antibiotics or inhaled steroids
Diabetics
Immunocompromised people

How does candidasis present?
A
Transient white patches in the mouth
White plaques on oesophagus

How is oral candidasis diagnosed?
A
- Should always be biopsied because white patches could be leucoplakia (pre-malignany)
- Direct smear from endoscope

How is oral candidasis treated?
A
If on immunosuppressive agents then treat prophylactically with one of:
- Nystatin
- Fluconazole
- Amphotericin

Why should oral candidasis always be biopsied?
A
White patches could be leucoplakia which is a form of pre-malignancy
