Who gets oral carcinoma?

A

Smokers/tar consumers /acetaldehye in Ecigs - carcinogens
People with heavy alcohol consumption
HPV- including transmission from oral sex

How does oral carcinoma present?

A

Lesions on the floor of the mouth and lateral borders of tongue
Advanced tumours are hard indurated ulcers with raised and rolled edges
Can have orofacial manifestations causing facial palsy, drooping eyelid etc

A

Biopsy

How is it treated?

A
  • Surgical excision - may require extensive neck dissection to remove lymph nodes
  • Radiotherapy
  • Photodynamic therapy for early lesions
