What is diverticulosis?
Asymptomatic diverticular disease
What is diverticulitis?
Diverticula are inflammed
-Muscularis propria undergoing hypertrophy as it pushes against slow moving faeces and creating pressure outpouchings
Diverticula present potential for material to get stuck in them and stagnate predisposing to infection and inflammation
What can severe diverticulitis lead to?
Perforation as result of faeces getting stuck at neck of diverticulum causing stagnation and allowing bacteria to multiply= inflammation
How does it present?
Normally in sigmoid colon
Diverticulitis presents as?
- LIF pain/tenderness
- Sepsis
- Altered bowel habit
How is diverticulosis diagnosed?
Incidental finding on barium enema, sigmoidoscopy
How are incidentally found diverticula treated?
High fibre diet
Treatment of uncomplicated diverticulitis?
Recommended high fibre
ABs and hospital admission
Treatment of complex diverticulitis?
Fluids
ABs: amox, met, gent
Complications of diverticular disease?
Pericolic abscess Perforation Haemorrhage Fistula Stricture Obstruction
Diverticular disease?

Presentation of diverticular disease?
Intermittent LQP- relived by pooing or fart
Constipation, diarrhoea
Abdominal bloating
Typical patient for diverticular disease is
Elderly woman
