What are they?
Liquid collection lined by an epithelium, no biliary tree communication
Different type of cysts?
Simple Hydatid Atypical Polycystic lesion Pyogenic abscess Amoebic Abscess
3 Types of polycystic liver disease?
Von Meyenburg complexes
Polycystic liver disease
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease ( ADPKD)
How does it present?
Mostly asymptomatic
Polycystic liver disease presents?
- Abdominal pain
- Abdominal distension
- Atypical symptoms due to voluminous cysts resulting in compression of adjacent tissue or failure of affected organs
Diagnosis of hydatid cyst?
Serological testing and detection of the anti-echinococcus antibodies
Treatment of simple cyst?
No follow up needed
If symptomatic/unclear in diagnosis maybe surgery
Treatment for a hydatid cyst?
Surgery- open cystectomy, peri-cystectomy, lobectomy
Medical- albendazole
Percutaneous drainage
Treatment of polycystic liver disease
Conservative: halts cyst growth following abdo decompression
Invasive procedures rarely required
Somatostatin analogies: beneficial outcome of PLD for symptom relief
