Chaga’s Disease Flashcards
What is Chaga’s disease?
Infection by the parasite trypanosoma Cruzi from Centra and South America
What pathology does trypanosoma cruzi cause?
Dilated cardiomyoapthy
Which infiltrative diseases cause dilated cardiomyopathy?
Haemochromatosis
Amyloidosis
Sarcoidosis
-> these can also cause restrictive heart failure
Which medical therapy causes DCM?
Doxorubicin
Which endocrine condition causes DCM?
Hyperthyroidism
What are the signs of DCM?
Displaced apex beat
S3 gallop rhythm
Mitral regurg
What test distinguishes between restrictive cardiomyopathy and constrictive pericarditis?
Cardiac MRI
What is arrythmogenic right ventircle cardiomyoapthy?
Fatty fibrous material replaces myocardium caused by genetic defects in desmosomes. It is usually inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion
What are the features of Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy?
Syncope
Palpitations
Cardiac sudden death
What is takotsubo cardiomyopathy?
Non ischaemic cardiomyopathy with transient ballooning of myocardium triggered by stress/broken heart
What is the key investigation of takotsubo cardiomyopathy?
Echocardiogram showing apical ballooning with hypokinesis (reduced activity of mid and apical segment
