What is a fistula
A fistula is defined as an abnormal connection between two epithelial surfaces.
When will fistula resolve spontaneously?
As long as there is no distal obstruction
What is an enterocutaneous fistula?
Links intestine to the skin and may be high or low output, may result from the spontaneous rupture of an abscess cavity onto the skin (such as following perianal abscess drainage
What are the features of duodenal/jejnula fistula?
Duodenal /jejunal fistulae will tend to produce high volume, electrolyte-rich secretions which can lead to severe excoriation of the skin
What are the features of colo-cutaneous fistula?
Leaks faeculent material
What is a risk with enterococci fistula?
Involves the large or small intestine: Bacterial overgrowth may cause malabsorption syndrome
How are high output fistulas managed pharmacologically?
Use of ocreotide to reduce volume and protect skin nutritional support
