What is biliary atresia?
Paediatric condition causing obliteration of the extrahepatic biliary system causing bile obstruction
What is biliary atresia affected?
More common in females
Typically affects neonatal children
What is type 1 biliary atresia?
Type 1: The proximal ducts are patent, however, the common duct is obliterated
What is type 2 biliary atresia?
Type 2: There is atresia of the cystic duct and cystic structures are found in the porta hepatis
What is type 3 biliary atresia?
Type 3: There is atresia of the left and right ducts to the level of the porta hepatis, this occurs in >90% of cases of biliary atresia MOST COMMON
How does biliary atresia present?
Jaundice
Dark urine and pale stools
Appetite and growth disturbance
What are the signs of biliary atresia?
Jaundice
Hepatomegaly with splenomegaly
Abnormal growth
Cardiac murmurs
What are key features of bleary atresia on investigation?
Conjugated hyperbilirubinaemia
What is the management of biliary atresia?
Surgical intervention
Antibiotic coverage
Bile acid enahncers
What is the complications of biliary atresia?
Progressive liver disease
Cirrhosis with hepatocellular carcinoma
Unsuccessful anastomosis
