What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are dilated and tortuous superficial veins commonly seen in the lower limbs. They develop due to the incompetence of the valves between the deep and superficial venous systems, which results in retrograde flow and pooling of blood in the superficial venous system
What are the risk factors for varicose veins?
Female sex
Age
DVT
Trauma to lower limb veins
Pregnancy
What is a key investigation for varicose veins?
Doppler ultrasound to visualise veins
What does a duplex ultrasound do?
Measure blood flow and blockages of veins
When are varicose veins managed conservatively?
If asymptomatic
What is first lie for symptomatic varicse veins?
Endo thermal ablation using radiogrquency
How are varicose veins managed in pregnancy?
Typically only with compression stockings
Which vein originates from lateral malleolus?
Short Saphenous system
Which vein originates from medial malleolus?
Long Saphenous system
What is a Saphenous valid?
Dilation of Saphenous vein at saphenofemoral junction. There will be a groin lump with overlying bluish tinge and positive cough impulse test.
What cases a lump below Inguinal ligament?
Femoral hernia
Saphenous varices
What cases a pulsating painless lump in groin below inguinal ligament?
Femoral artery aneurysm
What is the most common aneurysm of the peripheries?
Popliteal aneurysm
