9.3 Fermentation Flashcards
Why is fermentation needed
bc when a cell generates too much ATP from glycolysis, all of the available NAD+ are filled with electrons. Additionally, an absence of oxygen causes the electron transport chain to stop so NADH cannot convert to NAD+, stopping glycolysis
Fermentation
the partial breakdown of glucose without using oxygen to make ATP
what kind of process is fermentation
anaerobic
Where does fermentation take place
cytoplasm
How many parts is fermentation broken up into
2
what are the two parts of fermentation
glycolysis and fermentation
how many types of fermentation are there
2
what are the two types of fermentation
alcoholic and lactic acid
alcoholic fermentation
produces ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide
where does alcoholic fermentation take place in
yeasts
what is alcoholic fermentation used for
to produce alcoholic beverages and to make break dough rise
how many steps does alcoholic fermentation have
2
what are the two steps of alcoholic fermentation
glycolyis and regeneration of NAD+
what is the formula for alcoholic fermentation
Pyruvic acid + NADH = Alcohol + CO2 + NAD+
What are the products of alcoholic fermentation
2 ethyl alcohol, 2 CO2, 2 NAD+ and 2 ATP
