What is suicide?
When an individual intentionally ends their life.
Why might someone commit suicide?
Relief from bad thoughts or feelings
Feeling unwanted, unloved, or victimized
Feeling rejection, hurt, or loss
Out of control anger or fear
What are some risk factors?
Major depression
Long-term physical or emotional pain
Living with a terminal illness
Lost of security or a loved one
What are other risk factors?
Alcohol or substance abuse
Prior attempt of suicide
Family history of suicide
Trouble in school or with law enforcement
What are some warning signs?
Reckless behavior
Extreme changes in behavior
Withdrawal from others
What are 🚩 that you should look out for?
Giving away possessions
Talk of wanting to die
What are feelings that can be warning signs?
Unusual sadness, discouragement, or loneliness
Deep depression
Inability to concentrate
Restlessness
What is a suicide cluster?
Media sensationalizes suicide
Can lead to suicide pacts (often religious)
Can lead to copy-cat suicides
Can lead to mass suicides to convey a statement (political or otherwise)
What suicide prevention can be provided for YOU?
Talk to a trusted adult
Call a hotline or 911 for immediate help
What suicide prevention can be provided FOR OTHERS?
Confront the person and talk it out
- May help them see there are other options
