Body Protection From Pathogens Flashcards
What is a physical nonspecific defense?
Skin Sweat Mucus membranes Tears Washes off/blocks pathogens
What are chemical nonspecific barriers?
Sweat and oil
Enzymes of tears, saliva, and mucus
Stomach acid
Kills pathogens chemically
What is an inflammatory response? Nonspecific
Blood vessels dilate + Chemicals are released
Increased movement of fluids from blood vessels to damaged tissue
Swelling and attracts phagocytes, white blood cells that destroy pathogens
What is the immune system specific?
Combats a wide variety of foreign substances and targets specific ones
Distinguishes between cells and pathogens
Reacts quickly to previously encountered pathogens by the antigens on a cell or viruses protein
What are white blood cells?
Address pathogens
T Cells attack antigens and control response
B Cells produce antibodies
