What is early labor in stage 1?
Cervix dilates and becomes thinner
Each contraction lasts 30-60 seconds
Every 5-20 minutes
What is Active Labor stage 1?
Go to the hospital or contact midwife
Average of 8 hours
Cervix dilates from 4-10 cm
Contractions longer, stronger, and fre.
What is Birth of Baby stage 2?
Mother dilated to 10 cm
Baby’s head should emerge first
May last minutes to hours
What is important in Birth of Baby stage?
Umbilical cord is untangled
Airway is cleared
What is Delivery of Placenta stage 3?
Average of 5-10 minutes
Mild contractions
Umbilical cord and placenta are delivered
How should the placenta be when delivered?
Intact as risk of infection or bleeding could occur
What is vaginal childbirth?
Most common and safest form of child delivery
Sometimes uses forceps or vacuum extraction is necessary
What is the difference between natural and medicated birth?
Natural has no medication or surgery
Medicated includes epidural anesthesia into mothers spine which numbs from the waist down
When would a Caesarean section or c section be performed?
Baby is not in a head down position
Too large to pass through the pelvis
