When does it become a disorder?
Change in sleep/appetite
Loss of interest
Slowed thinking

What is major depression?
Severe and long-lasting
Episodes can occur periodically or chronically
Interfere with the ability to live life
What is dysthymia depression?
Less severe and long-lasting
Do not interfere with the ability to live, but does not allow a person to enjoy life
What is adjustment disorder?
Normal depression in reaction to a life event becomes long lasting
Interferes with happiness and daily activities
What is bipolar disorder?
Long term
Periods of severe depression
Alternate with severe happiness or enthusiasm (mania)
How can medications help treat depression disorders?
Doctors can prescribe medication
- must monitor closely for appropriate dosage
- can take several weeks to take effect
How can anti-depressants be dangerous?
Can have very serious risks and side effects
- FDA warns it can increase suicidal thoughts for those ages 18-24
How can therapy help treat depression disorders?
Helps people discover the cause of their disorder
Changes negative thinking patterns
Allows people to better deal with the symptoms of depression
How can electroconvulsive therapy help treat depression disorders?
Only for severe, life-threatening depression
Used when medication does not work
How does electroconvulsive therapy work?
Sends electric currents through the brain
6-12 treatments over a period of weeks
What are some healthy coping strategies?
Seek out supportive relationships
Get regular exercise
Eat a healthy diet
Improve self-esteem
