What are hereditary diseases?
Caused by genetic abnormality, passed between generations from one or both parents
Relatively rare occurrences
Single-gene, complex, chromosomal
What is the single gene?
A single gene is mutated in an incomplete or wrong order
Huntington’s disease (brain cells), sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis (defective lung mucus)
What are complex?
Multiple genetic mutations which are influenced by lifestyle choices
Type 2 diabetes and cancer
What are chromosomal diseases?
When a person inherits an incomplete number of chromosomes
Down syndrome, Turner syndrome
What are immune disorders?
Compromise of the human immune system
Body is vulnerable to infection
The system can be under or overactive
Allergies, asthma
What are autoimmune disorders?
Human immune system attacks it’s own body Cells, tissues, and organs Attacked tissue is an inflammation Rheumatoid arthritis Multiple sclerosis Women of 🤰more likely than men
What is coping and treatment?
Confront and accept the diagnosis
Openly discuss the situation
Consult with a doctor and follow treatment plan
Report updates or changes to doctor
