What is body composition?
The fat and nonfat components of the human body.
What is included in nonfat components?
Internal organs, bones, muscles, tendons.
What is essential body fat?
Body fat critical for body function. (Organs, bones, muscles, and nervous system)
How does essential body fat vary by gender?
Men: 3%
Women: 12%
What is storage fat?
Fat located around internal organs and below the skin to turn into energy when needed.
Why is storage fat important?
Insulation, shock absorption for organs, energy source, and healthy skin (reduces aging).
What are the healthy total body fat ranges?
Men: 10%-19%
Women: 15%-24%
Why is there a difference with gender?
Women need more energy sources because of their body function of carrying a baby.
How can body composition be used?
Percentage of
fat:lean body mass
It is a good indicator of health.
How is weight used?
A measure of all body mass <- Can be a misleading indicator
