Determining Body Composition Flashcards
What is Body Mass Index?
Uses data of height and weight across the population -> to determine healthy body composition
What does BMI not include?
Body frame size, muscle content
Does not measure body fat directly
How do you calculate BMI? (To height)
Convert height to inches
Multiply height by .0254
Multiply height by itself (square)
How do you calculate BMI? (To weight)
Divide body weight in pounds by 2.2
Divide weight result by height result
What are the ranges of BMI?
Underweight < 18.5 Normal 18.5-24.9 Overweight 25-29.9 Obese 30-39.9 Extreme obesity >= 40
What is the skin fold measurement?
A measure of skin fat thickness at several points on the body
Gathered + measured with calipers (clips)
At biceps, triceps, and hips
How are skin fold results measured?
Results are combined and compared to statistical data
Accuracy is questionable and based upon test administrator
What is waist circumference?
Indicator of abdominal fat
Disease risks:
Males > 40 inches
Females > 35 inches
How do you measure waist-to-hip ratio?
Waist circumference/hip circumference
Waist should be smaller than hips
What is the disease risk for hip-to-waist ratio?
Males: >.94
Females: >.82
What is bioelectrical impedance?
A low level electrical signal is passed through the body
Flows more easily with lean body mass
Accurate indicator
What are some factors of bioelectrical impedance?
Height, Age, Weight, Gender
What is hydrostatic weighing?
Comparison of normal weight to underwater weight
Density of body is then used to determine body fat percentage
Accurate indicator
What is Magnetic Resonance Imaging?
Uses magnetic imaging to view body tissue
Around 30 minutes
Accurate but costly
