renal embryology + basics Flashcards

1
Q

kidney embryology

A

pronephros: present at wk 4 → disappears
mesonephros: fetal kidney during 1st tri, becomes male genital system
metanephros: present at wk 5 → adult kidney

Q

caudal mesonephros (closest to feet) develops a

A

mesonepheric → ureteric bud: becomes collecting duct, renal calyces, ureter
ureteric bud induces metanephros: becomes renal tubular epithelial structures (nephron)
like mesodermal notochord inducing ectoderm above to form neural tube

Q

ureteric bud (collecting duct, calyces, ureter) fail to develop from caudal mesonephros

A

Potter sequence due to bilateral renal agenesis (no kidneys!):
no collecting system (no ureteric bud from caudal mesonephros)
no nephrons (no metanephros induction)
