Organelles Flashcards
Nucleus
Stores the genome & place where DNA & RNA is synthesize
Vesicle
Transportation with the cell
Rough Endoplasmic reticulum
Coated with ribosomes for proteins synthesis & transportation
Gogi Apparatus
Modify proteins that came from the ER, sorts & send those proteins to the proper organelle
Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum
Synthesizes lipids & steriods, metabolizes carbohydrates, & help break down toxic substances (like drugs)
Mitochondria
Makes ATP by oxidative phosphorylation
Vacuole
Storage of nutrients, wastes, water, or substances
Lysosomes
Intracellular degradation
Chloroplast
Also synthesize ATP & carbon fixation by photosynthesis
Peroxisomes
Breaks down toxic waste
Proteins made in the cytosol
Could end up in any ogranelle
Proteins made in the ER
Could be secreted, become intergal proteins in the cell membrane, or remain in the ER, Gogi appartus, or the lysosome
What organelles are apart of the secretory pathway?
The ER, Gogi appartus, the cell membrane, & the lysosome
Describe the first process of the secretory pathway
- Once the proteins in the ER are synthesized they travel into into the ER lumen (inside the ER) & travel to the smooth ER
- Secretory vesicles carry the proteins from the smooth ER to the Gogi appartus
- The protein in the secretory vesicles will enter the gogi appartus from the cis stack (part that is closest to the ER)
Describe the final part of the secretory pathway
- Once in the cis stack the protein will travel to the medial stack for further modifcation
- After the medial stack the proteins goes to the trans stack (the side furtherst away from the ER) & goes to the lysosome if it has the signal sequence for it
- The proteins in the lysosomes either becomes an intergral protein or becomes part of another organelle
