Meningeal Coverings and the Ventricular System Flashcards
What are the 3 different meningeal coverings?
- Dura
- Arachnoid
- Pia Mater
Is there epidural space in the skull?
No - it is only found in the spine
What are the functions of the dura mater?
- Provides mechanical strength
* Separates different intracranial components
Is the dura pain sensitive?
Yes
What are the functions of the arachoid?
Thin, avascular, several layers of cells adhering to the dura with a barrier function
Where are the cerebral veins and arteries found?
Subarachnoid Space - it is filled with CSF
How does CSF enter the venous system?
Through the arachnoid villi
What are the functions of the pia mater?
Covers the surface of the brain and closely follows its external surface
Denticulate Ligaments
Anchor the spinal cord to the arachnoid
Filum Terminale
Anchors the caudal spinal cord to the caudal end of the spinal dural sheath
What is the perivascular space where vessels enter and leave the brain?
Virchow-Robin Space
Spinal Epidural Space
Spinal epidural space is between periosteum and dura
What is the flow of CSF?
- Made in the ventricles
- Flows out the median and lateral apertures
- Into the cisterns
- Through the tentorial notch
- Through the arachnoid villi to the venous sinuses
Where is the CSF made?
Choroid Plexus mainly with some from the capillary bed crossing the BBB as interstitial fluid
Arachnoid Villi
Outpouchings of the subarachnoid space that connect it to venous sinuses to allow for the dumping of CSF
