How does the appearance of the cells of the urothelium (transitional epithelium) change?
A
With dissension the cells will be flat. Without distension, the cells will be cuboidal.

What are the functions of urothelium?
A
- Accommodate the changes in volume
- Protect against the caustic effects of the urine

What are the umbrella cells?
A
Umbrella cells are the dome-shaped surface cells of the bladder urothelium which bulge into the lumen when the bladder is empty (relaxed state). When the bladder is full, the urothelium is stretched, the cells become flattened.
