Liver Tumors Flashcards
What is the most common hepatic neoplasm?
Metastatic carcinomas
Wha tis the most common primary hepatic neoplasm?
Hepatocellular carcinoma
What are the risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma?
- Hepatitis C infection
- Hepatitis B infection
- Alcoholic cirrhosis
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
- Aflatoxin
What is the tumor marker associated with HCC?
Alpha-fetoprotein
What is the prognosis of the fibrolamellar variant of hepatocellular carcinoma?
It has a better prognosis than other variants of HCC.
What are the features of hemangioma?
In the liver cavernous hemangiomas appear red-blue nodules which are often located directly beneath the capsule.
What are the features of focal nodular hyperplasia?
FNH usually develops in women of reproductive age.
They may grow in response to estrogens, including those in oral contraceptive pills.
FNH vary in size from
What are the features of hepatic adenoma?
Hepatic adenomas usually develop in women of reproductive age who have used oral contraceptive pills (OCPs).
They usually regress on cessation of OCP use.
They may rapidly increase is size during pregnancy and there is a risk of rupture.
Benign but a variant of hepatic adenoma bearing b-catenin mutations do carry a risk of developing into HCC
What cancers most commonly metastasize to the liver?
The most common cancers which metastasize to the liver include those of colon, pancreas, lung and breast.
What policies can lead to the lowering of the incidence of HCC?
Hepatitis B immunization programs
What are the features of fibrolamellar HCC?
It occurs in 20-40 year old males and females
It is NOT associated with cirrhosis or other known risk factors for HCC
What cell type do angiosarcomas arise from?
Angiosarcomas are malignant endothelial neoplasms.
What is a risk factor for hepatic angiosarcomas?
Vinyl chloride
What is the most common benign hepatic tumor?
Cavernous Hemangioma
What is the main risk factor for hepatic adenoma?
Estrogen and OCPs
