Histology: Urinary Tract II Flashcards
What are the 2 types of barriers that the glomerulus provides?
- Size - Charge (negatively charged proteins are repelled)
What are the narrow tubules with more eosinophilic cells?
Proximal Tubule
What is a prominent feature of the PT?
Abundant brush border that increases the SA and thus the absorptive function
What is the function of the juxtaglomerular apparatus?
Formed by the DT and the afferent arteriole with the function of regulation of BP and GFR via Na/Cl concentration
The juxtaglomerular apparatus is a specialized structure formed by the distal convoluted tubule and the glomerular afferent arteriole. The main function is to regulate blood pressure and the filtration rate of the glomerulus.
The juxtaglomerular cells, modified smooth muscle cells in the wall of the afferent artriole, secrete renin in order to reglate blood pressure.
What is the function of the mesangial cells?
- Provide support
- Phagocytosis
- Regulate blood flow of the glomerular capillaries
What parts of the nephron does the medulla contain?
- Loop of Henle
- Collecting Duct
What is shown?
Medulla
